What is CVV fraud?
CVV stands for card verification value. It is the three or four digit security code on a payment card. Criminals steal CVV numbers and sell them online. Buying or selling a CVV without permission is credit card fraud. It is illegal under federal and state laws.
‘Trusted shops’ are criminal enterprises
Websites that offer CVV for sale are not legitimate businesses. They are part of the illegal carding economy. Sellers use stolen card data. A shop that claims to be trusted simply means it has a reputation among criminals for delivering stolen data. No legal authority approves or certifies such shops. Selling CVV is a federal crime, regardless of the seller’s reputation.

Federal penalties

How to identify and report
If you see a website selling CVV, it is likely a scam or a law enforcement sting. Do not engage. Report it to the Internet Crime Complaint Center at IC3.gov. You can also report to the Federal Trade Commission at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.
